چکیده

Random vortex methods are applied to the analysis of boundary layer instability in two and three space dimensions. A thorough discussion of boundary conditions is given. In two dimensions, the results are in good agreement with known facts. In three dimensions, a new version of the method is introduced, in which the computational elements are vortex segments. The numerical results afford new insight into the effects of the third dimension on the stability of a boundary layer over a fiat plate.

Evaluation of 2-D Aeroelastic Models Based on Indicial Aerodynamic Theory and Vortex Lattice Method in Flutter and Gust Response Determination

Two 2-D aeroelastic models are presented here to determine instability boundary (flutter speed) and gust response of a typical section airfoil with degrees of freedom in pitch and plunge directions. To build these 2-D aeroelastic models, two different aerodynamic theories including Indicial Aerodynamic Theory and Vortex Lattice Method (VLM) have been employed. Also, a 3-D aeroelastic framework ...

Secondary instability of crossflow vortices

Crossflow-dominated swept-wing boundary layers are known to undergo a highly nonlinear transition process. In low-disturbance environments, the primary instability of these flows consists mainly of stationary streamwise vortices that modify the mean velocity field and hence the stability characteristics of the boundary layer. The result is amplitude saturation of the dominant stationary mode an...

Vortex Methods and Turbulence Theory

Vortex methods have been developed over the last fifteen years, and have found numerous applications to incompressible and slightly compressible flow, combustion theory, reaction/diffusion equations, and boundary layer theory. Vorticity dominates the mechanics of most real flows and often concentrates in small subsets of the flow field, and thus vortex methods focus effort on the variables of m...

Studies of turbulent boundary layer flow through direct numerical simulation

The objective has been to study turbulent boundary layers under adverse pressure gradients (APG) through direct numerical simulation (DNS). The numerical code is based on a pseudo-spectral technique which is suitable for the simple geometry (flat plate) considered here. A large effort has been put into the optimization of the numerical code on various super computers. Five large simulations hav...

Computation of Periodic Instability of Stratified Fluid Using Continuous Vortex Sheet Dynamics

A new model is proposed to compute the time evolution of the interface between two inviscid fluids moving with uniform velocity, subjected to instabilities of the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) type. In this model, the interface is represented by a Continuous Vortex Sheet (CVS) which both preserves the full nonlinearity of interfacial boundary conditions and provides a higher-order representation of the...
